Are you trying to build a reliable leadership team but are having a hard time keeping your best managers? The truth is, great managers don’t leave jobs; they leave because they can’t see a future. The trick is to provide them with a clear roadmap to success and create a team that's motivated to stay and grow. To do that here are five steps to build your restaurant dream team.

  1. Start with a management depth chart: Think of a depth chart like a team roster. It helps you see where you’re strong and where you need to build. Write down all your current managers, their skills, and where they could grow. This exercise gives you a clear picture of your team’s potential and highlights areas where you need to invest in training or hiring.
  2. Define clear career paths: People need to see where they’re headed. Outline a path for growth within your restaurant, from entry-level positions all the way up to general manager. Specify the skills and responsibilities required for each step. Sharing this roadmap during the hiring process is also a great way to attract ambitious and motivated candidates.
  3. Offer ongoing training and development: If you want your managers to succeed, you’ve got to give them the tools to do it. Invest in leadership training, workshops or mentorship programs. Regularly check in with your managers to provide feedback and track their progress. Pairing experienced managers with newer ones can foster a culture of knowledge-sharing and mutual growth.
  4. Align career growth with your company goals: Help your managers understand how their personal growth aligns with the restaurant’s success. Whether it’s hitting sales goals, improving customer service, or boosting staff retention, show them the bigger picture. Reward their contributions and celebrate milestones publicly to keep them engaged and motivated.
  5. Build a culture of recognition and opportunity: A little recognition goes a long way. Make your managers feel valued by acknowledging their hard work. This could be through bonuses, promotions, or even a simple public shout-out. Regular one-on-one meetings are an excellent opportunity to discuss their careers, set goals, and show them you’re invested in their future.

Build your restaurant dream team

Creating career paths for your managers isn’t just about keeping them around; it’s about building a team that’s as invested in your restaurant’s success as you are. When your managers see a future with your restaurant, they’ll stick around, work harder and help you grow your business.
